Wingate Campground UT -> Green River State Park UT
63.2 Miles, 1388 ft elevation
"You know today is your blog day, right?"
"My what day?"
"BLOG DAY," Jess yelled from behind as we biked on US-91.
"Oh shoot, I forgot. What a boring day to blog."
We left from Wingate Campground in Dead Horse State Park in the morning and enjoyed some nice downhills off the plateau. Once we reached US-91, it was high desert as far as the eye could see.
We pushed through the heat and slight uphill, but everything changed when we reached the intersection with I-70. The savior of this otherwise boring blog appeared on the horizon in obnoxious neon alien green. It was a gas station, but not like any I'd ever seen. "AREA STUPID" was printed in impact font above the gas pumps.
The inside of this gas station did not disappoint. Staying true to the over-the-top pop culture references, it was flamboyantly painted and decked out with recognizable cardboard cutouts.
They even had a golden toilet!
We continued along a route last year's team took, where many of the members achieved their PRs. It was now time for us to race these times. With a slight downhill and a generous tailwind, we were zooming down I-70. Hank even beat last year's team and got the fastest time on Strava (ignoring the obvious cheater who must have been in a car).
We arrived relatively early in Green River and ate lunch in the park. Then we went to the Green River State Park Campground and were pleasantly surprised to find eight very nice showers ready for us to use. Talk about glamping!
After washing up and pitching camp, we decided to head to the local library to get some work done. My motto is to never work on an empty stomach, so we got some ice cream before. I got a banana split!
Cleo made delicious spaghetti and a watermelon fruit salad for dinner. We continued our 36 questions, aiming to finish by the time we reach SF. I love our dinner conversations, learning about each other's lives, and sharing childhood stories. After a long day of biking, sitting down for a meal with the team is one of my favorite parts of Spokes, and I know I'll miss it after the summer ends.
